How big is organic food?
UK sales of organic food and drink grew 30% last year. Sales of non-organic grew only 3 %. How big can the organic market grow? According to Europe-wide research, the more organic food is available, the more is bought. Would you buy more organic food if it were available?
Is air-freight sinful?
The Soil Association might ban airfreight from its organic standards because it contributes to climate change. Aeroplanes emit greater amounts of greenhouse gases than any other form of transport. Airfreighting accounts for 1% of UK food and produces 11% of food transport emissions. In comparison shipping accounts for 65% of UK food but creates only 12% of emissions.
Banning airfreight on organic food might reduce emissions but it could also affect the livelihoods of tens of thousands in developing countries. Does the carbon footprint of your food matter to you?
How local is organic?
If we ate only local organic food, we would be reliant on the UK weather and our choice would be restricted. On the other hand, a freshly harvested organic carrot cannot compare with one that has been shipped from Holland and chilled. What’s your shopping habit?
