Local Food

It's hard to describe the joy I get when I see sheep or cows grazing in the evening sun or the seagulls following a tractor as it ploughs a field. Local food means fresh food, local employment, less petrol used and the joy of seeing a working landscape.
Local food Questions
Local - more important than organic?
According to a Triodos poll, 90% of consumers want to local food, compared to 46% wanting organic food. Is the way food is farmed less important than where it is farmed?
Can supermarkets source local food
Supermarkets depend on a centralised distribution system. Even if the food is local, it clocks up a ridiculous amount of UK food miles. Those Cornish potatoes in a Suffolk supermarket were packed in Scotland. Do you mind how far your food has travelled?
“I don’t spray my vegetables,” says the farmer.
The asparagus in the farmers’ market look good but they don’t have an organic label. I’d rather buy from my local market but chemical-free is important too. My grower is reassuring but without legal verification, how can I be sure it’s the truth? Which do you trust: someone’s recommendation or expert certification?
